The Tauren snorted, tossed his head, and kicked at the dust around the tree with his hooves before muttering to himself, "Come on old bull..." He shaded his eyes with a hand and stood a little taller, hoping to see the absent Tauren. He caught sight of a small figure on the horizon and snorted again, "Finally." He stepped away from the tree and jogged south, slowly at first, before lowering his shaggy, maned head and falling into the great, loping strides of Tauren plainsrunning. The young bull grinned and snorted with pleasure. Forget the old bull, forget the stupid Great Hunt ritual, this was freedom, this was how a Tauren was supposed to be. He ran faster, his breath coming in short, powerful bursts, his hooves sending clouds of dust up behind him. The young bull bellowed, a primal urge that had no choice but to be satisfied, and ran faster and faster, the grass falling flat beneath his hooves, the earth below him a blur.

He had always loved running, not just races against the other calves when he was younger, but going out to the plains and letting loose without having to worry about tripping over the taught ropes that criss-crossed the ground in camp or plowing someone over. His mother had always told him, and still did, actually, that he was going to run his hooves down one of these days. This thought terrified him as a calf and he actually walked everywhere for an entire four hour period when she first told him. But no, not even his mother's dire warnings could keep him from this, his one passion.

He lifted his gaze for the first time in minutes, thanking the Earthmother for the flatness of the plains, and saw that what had once been a small speck on the horizon was now a white-furred, older Tauren male and was another two minutes away at most. His breath was coming out in mighty snorts now and his chest was rising and falling, expanding its breadth to almost comic proportions as he attempted to regulate his breathing and slow down. Soon enough, he had slowed to an evenly-paced trot. He examined the older bull's face and noticed the traces of the frown playing at the corners of his mouth. Embarrassed, he noticed that his face most likely had a ridiculous grin stretching across it but was, as usual, unable to control it and so he "coughed" a few times, covering his mouth, until he was able to calm down.

The other bull's tail twitched, "Why, might I ask, did you run all the way here?"

The young Tauren's tail twitched in response, irritated at the early confrontational question. "I saw you approaching and thought it wou-"

"I asked you to meet me at the tree in the central plains, Deparo," the bull interrupted.

Deparo's tail twitched again, "What does it matter, Narlox? I have met you here instead; are you not grateful that I have saved you the trip?"

Narlox's eyes narrowed, dull grey but glinting with anger. When he finally spoke, his words were short and emphatic, "The proper response is, 'I apologize, Elder.'"

Deparo snorted, directed his gaze down to the grass, and pulled a handful out of the ground. "I apologize, Elder. Where are we going today?"

He looked at the younger Tauren, a skeptical look in his eye, before snorting himself and tossing his shaggy, white-maned head. "The tree," he said dryly.

Deparo opened his mouth to respond but quickly chomped it shut. Between his closed teeth, he managed to mutter, "As you say, Elder."

The remainder of the trip passed in silence, slowly becoming more comfortable with each step as both Tauren calmed down. By the time the tree was a sprint away, Narlox had relaxed considerably, his earlier scowl replaced by a fond, if tired, expression as he looked at Deparo. "Go ahead, boy," he said, noticing Deparo's anxiously twitching tail.

The younger bull looked at Narlox, surprised, "Really? Thank you, Eld-"

"Just go, boy!" he said, smiling.

With that, Deparo lowered his head, his shiny black horns catching the light, and started running as though the Earthmother herself had commanded it. His arms pumped and his breath came in short, controlled bursts; his hooves hit the dirt with such force that barely any dust was kicked up, it was pounded into the earth so tightly. He bellowed yet again and sustained it, letting it spur him on during the final sprint to the tree. As he blew past the tree, the bellow changed into a triumphant cry as he raised himself upright and lifted his fist into the air. Unfortunately, Narlox's warning was unable to be heard over the cheer.

The bull kodo roared from Deparo's left, his breath blew the grass in front of him down and tendrils of saliva splashed onto the side of Deparo's face and body. He whirled to face the beast, his eyes wide as he panted, trying to regain his recently spent breath. The kodo reared back on its hind legs and brought its forelimbs crashing to the ground, the force of the impact shook Deparo off his hooves and he tumbled to the ground. The kodo lowered its head and lunged forward, posturing, as it roared again. The Tauren locked eyes with the animal and slowly rose to his feet again, trying to remember the next step his father had taught him. Lock eyes, stand your ground, and... roar back? His tail twitched nervously and the kodo huffed a great breath again, blowing Deparo's mane back. He began to shake slightly, terrified in the face of this enormous, angry beast. His eyes flitted to the left, risking a look the way he came for any sign of Narlox. The momentary break in eye contact was enough though, and before Deparo had a chance to look back ahead, the kodo had plowed into his chest with the large, blunt horn on its nose.

"Deparo!" Narlox cried as he finally came within shouting distance. "Keep eye contact! Stand your ground!"

I know those two! is what he thought as the air whooshed out of his lungs. "Uuuggghhhhhooofffff," is what came out of his mouth. He held onto the horn tightly as his vision threatened to blackout entirely; the world was spinning a mile a minute but he still knew better than to let go and risk getting trampled. The kodo slowed his charge and swung his head around, looking for the stupid Tauren who was in his territory. Deparo held on even tighter, his knuckles aching from trying to hold on to the thick, bony plate of the horn. Finally, the kodo stopped, grunting his dissatisfaction loudly to the plains.

Now what? Deparo thought. He looked down at the ground below him. The drop was nothing, but if the kodo saw him, he would be trampled before he had a chance to do anything. In fact, he began to panic, what would I do even if it didn't see me. He pulled his head away from where it had been pressed tightly against the horn and looked around for Narlox. A flash of light caught his eye and he turned to face the solitary tree, squinting against the sun setting behind it. Again, a light flashed into his eyes, but this time, he saw its source, a long, viciously sharpened blade of polished obsidian at the end of Narlox's spear. The older bull was creeping out from behind the tree, his eyes fixed on the kodo, watching for any trace of movement. Deparo noticed for the first time the way the older Tauren moved, completely silent, body tense and prepared; he noticed the way the bulging muscles in his forearm flexed as he held the heavy, rune-covered spear out in front of himself with the practiced precision of a trained warrior; he appreciated the focus that was clearly written on the Elder's face, any traces of age disappearing as he zeroed in on his prey. Narlox crept closer, and closer, and closer still, until he was within throwing range of the beast yet he continued on, drawing closer. He doesn't want to risk missing and making the beast rampage, Deparo realized. The kodo took a couple of steps forward and bent down, pulling some grass into his mouth, and began to chew loudly. Narlox had frozen, no fear on his face, just a patient resolve; he hesitated a moment before resuming his silent approach.

Suddenly, Deparo knew. He did not know how he knew, but he knew. The kodo could smell Narlox, he knew he was there, and there was nothing he could do about it. He tried to catch Narlox's eyes, but the Tauren was intent on his target, mere paces away from the beast's tail. The tail, Deparo suddenly knew again. He's going to swipe at him with his tail. Narlox was now beside the kodo's tail and had his spear pulled back, ready to thrust into the beast's side where its heart was.

"Narlox, jump!" Deparo cried, leaping off of the kodo's horn and rolling away. Narlox looked up, surprised, but leapt into the air just as the kodo's tail swept across the ground where he had just been. Deparo sprung to his feet, quick for someone his size, and faced the beast, fearing another charge, but the kodo had already turned to face Narlox.

The Elder locked eyes with the kodo and stomped his hoof on the ground, similar to the gesture the kodo had made at Deparo. He bellowed and raised his spear toward the raging bull. The kodo roared in response and lowered its head before charging. Narlox leapt to the side, barely avoiding being trampled.

"Narlox!" Deparo screamed, running toward him. He suddenly felt enraged at the old bull. No, that's not right, he thought, confused as he raced forward, I'm not angry... But there it was again, a rush of anger as he watched the kodo charge at Narlox. Intruder. Invader. Protect herd. Deparo slowed, these strange, foreign thoughts making him feel almost dizzy with confusion. Narlox leapt away again but not before the edge of the kodo's horn caught his side and sent him flying to the ground. The Elder rolled and was suddenly on his feet, his recovery faster than could even be seen. The spear had never left his capable hands and he now rushed toward the kodo, unable to recover as quickly as the much smaller Tauren. Narlox bellowed as he saw his target, the small, soft patch of skin just behind the left leg.

"Stop!" Deparo shouted in a voice louder than he knew he could shout. Narlox's focus wavered and he stopped his charge, nearly tumbling to the ground. The kodo turned and stared past Narlox at Deparo, prompting the older Tauren to do the same. Deparo stood with his hands outstretched, a desperate look on his face. "Narlox, Elder, please, do not kill him." Narlox turned back to the Kodo, remembering what was happening, and raised his spear again. The kodo did not react, he simply continued to stare at Deparo. "Elder, please. Listen to me, he means us no harm."

Narlox kept the tip of his spear hovering just above the soft spot in the beast's hide but looked at Deparo. "Have you gone mad, Deparo? What is the meaning of this?"

"We are on his land, Elder. His herd is nearby. He is only protecting his family." His hands were still extended toward the beast and he noticed that he was trembling.

"You are speaking nonsense." Narlox turned back to the beast and pulled back the spear, the muscles on his arms rippling as he prepared to thrust.

"No!" Deparo bellowed as he dropped to his knees, closing his hands into fists and bringing them down in a swift motion. The kodo dropped to the ground in a heap.

Narlox took several swift steps back and stared at the beast, watching its hide rise and fall as it breathed deeply in its sleep. His gaze turned to Deparo whose head was now in his hands, his body shaking with what, even from this distance, were clearly sobs. Narlox looked down at the spear in his hand, looked once more at the sleeping kodo, and threw the weapon to the ground.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Chief spoke into the silence with a deep and clear voice, "Brothers and sisters. We gather here tonight for the Naming of a bull we all know well."

The crowd of Tauren bulls, cows, and calves murmured excitedly amongst themselves, the flames of the large bonfire alternatingly casting light and shadow across their faces.

The Chief held up his hand and silence fell again. "We have watched him grow, watched him learn from his father, Earthmother rest his soul, from his mother, and from the Elders. And we have watched him trip over the tent-ropes and crash into the shamans' tents dozens of times over the years."

The crowd laughed at this and here and there the name "Deparo" could be heard spoken in various tones ranging from light and cheerful to disgruntled and disapproving.

"Now, now, let me speak, please," the crowd hushed, this time much more quickly. "As I said, we all know this bull well, but today... Today he has come to know himself. And today, we will all know him as he now knows himself. Deparo, come forward."

Deparo rose to his feet from where he had been sitting in the front row and walked to the Chief, his head bowed.

"Raise your head, my son. This is an honor not only for you, but for all of us here who have had a hand in raising you up to be who you are now. Let us see your face."

He lifted his head and looked out over the crowd, smiling as he saw the expressions on the faces of his friends, his neighbors, and his mother.

"Deparo Runetotem," the Chief spoke the young bull's name in his low, soft voice. "Today, you have shown that a Great Hunt does not always end in a kill. Today, my son, you have shown us that your quarry was understanding. Your Great Hunt revealed the greatness that lies in your heart."

Deparo smiled sheepishly, turning his lavender-hued eyes down to the ground again.

"Deparo Runetotem," the Chief bellowed, causing many in the crowd to jump in their seats. "Stand proud, for I now Name you, 'Greatheart'. Many the Eternal Sun shine upon you, evermore." He stood tall and faced the young bull, touching his hand to his heart, then to his brow.

"Greatheart, Greatheart, Greatheart, Greatheart!" the crowd began to chant, louder and louder over the roaring of the fire. "Greatheart, Greatheart, Greatheart!"

Greatheart stood tall and proud and looked over the faces of his tribe. "Greatheart," he said softly to himself. He smiled.

the beginning of the end

He tossed and turned as memories and thoughts of what happened in Northrend and of Arthas fled into his mind. They had been submerged and only recently had come back. With a scream, the Goblin shot up out of his bed, sweat dripping down his face he sighs that it was only a dream. It was the fifth hour of morning, knowing he would not be able to sleep; he wrote all that had happened in his journal. After a brief moment of finding his gear,he grabs his bow and heads out of his little "shack" he calls home. He makes his way towards the guild hall, an uneasy and rather unnerving thought still lingered in his mind, one he could not get rid of despite how hard he tried. No matter, the sun was starting to peak over the horizon. It was a beautiful morning, one i'm sure he will not forget.

He wasn't sure why he always came back here maybe it was to help him remember his family or maybe he was hoping he would find her, their youngest sister. He remembered her as a fiery little redhead who was too stubborn for her own good. Dynda told him that she used to follow him around and when she was ever in trouble he was always there to save her. Dynda said that he was her hero, which made him feel that he needed to find her even more.

Shaking his head he got off his horse and walked a few yards, that's when he heard it, footsteps. He could hardly hear it but he heard it.
She wanted to go back. Not for the colors she left behind but for those students that she had taught and those that would come. At the same time she worried over her daughter. The Order would welcome her, regardless of her parents. No one would cross her to hurt her daughter. She also worried over Maxer and his mouth. She could handle him. A good shoe to the head or a pan in the face kept him in check most times. Yet she worried if he crossed lines with Nim or another high ranking officer. To many Ifs...

"i want to go back. She would be safe inside those walls for the most part.... And I still bare the colors of the Order. If we do go back.... Promise me you will not get yourself into trouble. That i don't have to explain to your children why daddy is locked up."

She gave him a hard look. One that she had perfected finally.

Maldane stirred some, raising his massive head to stare at the three.

we go back, ill keep him in check.

dayna laughed as she shook her head. Very active. Very angry.
It was the specter of death, Rawley.
He hit the ground, thrashing and screeching like a banshee. He was so covered in blood that his very outline seemed to sink into the red liquid. The blood danced around him in a gruesome mist, snaked across his body, seemed to live of it's own accord. He was missing his left arm. His head, usually enclosed in a heavy plate helm, was naked. Half of his head was crushed in, the skin gone. His remaining arm clutched his rune axe in a death grip. The axe was forged for two hands, but Rawley swung it with one, at a seemingly impossible speed. The fearsome weapon made the sound of faint screams as it rent the air.
"NO!" he screamed.
Rawley thrashed. He swung his axe more. Blood worms followed him in hordes, feasting on the all-you-can-eat buffet that Rawley was to them. He obliterated a tree.
"NO!" he screamed again.
Next, a farm house fell. The farmer and his family were less lucky than the tree. More liquid was added to Rawley's reserves.
"HE. MUST. DIE!" Rawley roared.

Rawley slammed the ground with his axe. It rent the ground, causing great gashes. A ghostly green light gleamed in the gashes of the earth. Horrible creatures begin to claw their way free from the soil. The dead were rising.

Some of them looked suspiciously similar to a recently deceased family.

Rawley's blazing blue eyes burned with the intensity of a supernova. He slammed his axe into the ground once more. His undead minions stared at him blankly. He walked up to the deceased farmer and ripped his arm off as easily as a grown man might rip the arm off a cloth doll. He jammed it in his empty socket, where his left arm used to be. Blood worms immediately went to work, fusing the grisly new arm to his torso. He flexed his new limb.
Rawley retrieved his axe. He howled and swung it two handed in a great arc, directly at his unmoving henchmen. All of them were cut in half in one swoop. The runeblade absorbed the victims entirely and glowed a fierce, dark red. The weapon was screaming louder now. It radiated sheer power.

"THEY. ALL. MUST. DIE!" Rawley howled.

He looked down at his original arm. There was a small note frozen to it, barely visible in the blood. It read"Garrosh Hellscream". Rawley flexed. More letters burned onto the parchment. They read "And his portal-making mages."

Rawley shambled forward relentlessly.

Garrosh still lived.

And there was a town on the horizon.

OpenRaid

Its amazing if you can find a good group.... Where the hell was that gnoll with the food? It was taking forever. It ALWAYS took forever.
Bently sat there on the shoreline, waiting for his food. Today was an unusually quiet day on the coast of Stranglethorn. No birds chirped. No turtles walked along the shoreline to annoy Bentley with their stupid faces. No moans of women came from the Captain's tent. No monkeys flung their shit at him. Today was an unusual day, indeed. A good day, Bentley decided.
"Damn it. Damn that gnoll. I hate gnolls." Bently complained.
Still he sat there. Still he waited.
"That's it. I'm going to camp to see what th' bloody hell is takin' so long." Bently spoke to himself once more.
And so he walked. Along the sand, along the shoreline...the unusually quiet shoreline. A small chill crept up Bentley's spine.
"No," he assured himself "it's nothin'."
But he was wrong.
As Bentley neared camp he heard them. The sounds. The horrible, horrible sounds. Screaming. Screaming EVERYWHERE. Underneath the screaming was men shouting orders...howls of pain...and the sound.
The steady, uneding clank of plate armor.
Bently was terrified. No one had dared attack their camp since the Captain shoved a flagpole up that dwarf's arse last week.
But they were clearly under attack now. And losing.
Bently steeled himself and drew his cutlass. He shook the willies from his britches and charged past the palm trees. He surveyed the scene and---
"Mm-mmother of..." he stammered.
Total slaughter.
Shriveled corpses were strewn about. Giant, red pillars of ice slowly melted. Bodies were impaled upon them. Poor Gobby McWibberfinks had his own samophlange shoved through his tiny, ugly goblin face. Sexy Sally had wounds so garish that Bentley no longer had an appetite. And Bentley was always hungry.
Clink. Clank.
Where was it coming from?? Was there anyone left?? Oh gods, oh gods, someone please...
Clink. Clank.
Bentley began to cry. He pulled his musket out of its holder and began to shoot blindly, wildly.
Clink. Clank.
Bentley began to feel cold. He was weeping more freely now, crazily.
Clink. Clank.
Bentley gave up. He fell into the fetal position and started rocking back and forth.
Clink...
Bentley listened. Where was the...?
CLANK.
He felt a frigid touch on the nape of his neck. Suddenly, he was being hoisted in the air.
Below him was a tall, terrible figure. Draped in moving, fresh blood, he was a spectre of death. He was so cold that Bentley's bones hurt. He pissed himself. It froze.
"P-please s-sir..." he stammered.
The plated figured stared at him with terrible, blazing blue eyes. He spoke slowly, his voice distorted and sounding like a moving glacier.
"No. More." the figure said.
Bently began to scream, but a gauntleted hand grabbed his face. It was so cold that it burned. Then the pressure. It was squeezing. Squeezing so hard. Bentley felt as if he eyes were going to...oh gods! His eye must have popped! He must be---
Darkness.
